Each year, for close to three decades, the Kitzbühel Alpine Rally has been taking place in Austria and sees some of Europe’s most notable classic cars come out for some sun, a little driving and some getting acquainted with a new generation of fans. The Volkswagen Group, one of the primary sponsors of the event, this year celebrated the 40th anniversary of its Polo subcompact by taking some historic versions to the rally as well as the latest generation. The lineup included one of the original models from 1975 and a classy second-generation G40.
Our friends at AutoEmotionenTV were also present, and have put together this video of some of the highlights. Motorsport fans will recognize the presence of German racing legend Hans-Joachim Stuck, a multiple winner in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. VW’s World Rally Championship-winning driver Sebastian Ogier was also present.
The rally first came about when classic car enthusiast Hasi Unterberger, a local chef from the Austrian town of Kitzbühel, organized a rally in 1988 that saw 70 cars show up. At this year’s rally, around 200 old timers took part. Highlights included an Audi Quattro, a Porsche 356, a Mercedes-Benz SL300, an original VW Bus and numerous classic Beetles.
The 2015 Kitzbühel Alpine Rally ran from May 27-30.
